A comfortable, durable, minimalist boot with a wide toe box, zero drop & excellent traction? A rarity, almost an impossibility, until you meet the new LEMS Boulder Summit Waterproof Boot.
One of LEMS’ newest innovations, the Boulder Summit Waterproof Boot, draws inspiration from their Original Boulder Boot. This previous style was ideal for minimalists seeking durable boots designed for casual wear. Even though it checked all the boxes for a great everyday boot, the original outsole did not provide enough traction for hiking. Thankfully, LEMS Boulder Summit Waterproof Boot remedies that situation! These fully waterproof boots combine all the minimalist features we love about the Original Boulder Boot, complete with the rugged outsole of their Outlander Boot to offer a more secure grip. Here’s my thoughts on the Original Boulder Boot.
FIT/STYLE
These beauties feature a foot-shaped toe box that allows for maximum room. Because they are Zero-Drop, your forefoot and heel stay close to the ground.
LEMS recommends ordering this in your standard size. I typically wear a 9 or 9.5 and went with the 9.5 to allow room for my thickest socks. I would definitely agree they are true to size. As LEMS footwear has changed it’s sizing over the years, I always recommend checking out the size chart.
I love the look and feel of this boot. It provides the additional protection of heavier boots while offering a zero-drop heel with a wide toe box. Many have noticed that switching to zero drop footwear helps improve posture and find they walk more comfortably. LEMS is an ideal transition brand if you are new to minimalist footwear. If this is your first pair of zero-drop shoes, remember that it may take time for your body to adjust and your gait to change. I always recommend transitioning to minimalist footwear slowly and gradually to avoid injury.
MATERIAL
You have a few options with this Waterproof boot. I was gifted the full-grain, oiled leather Boot in Bark (brown). There is also a Coal (black) version available. If you prefer a Vegan choice, you will be happy to know the Boulder Summit Waterproof is also available in a Waterproof Nylon version.
DURABILITY / PERFORMANCE
Keep stable and benefit from incredible traction thanks to LEMS impressive new outsoles. They are designed with a sticky rubber featuring 4mm deep lugs and built-in zig-zag grooves that provide incredible traction on snow, mud, and rocks. A fully gusseted tongue will keep out debris and small rocks, while the waterproof membrane will keep you dry. To ensure longevity the leather can be reconditioned to retain its best waterproofing using Otter Wax Kits available here.
PROS:
- Natural foot-shaped boot with wide Toe box
- Zero Drop
- Lightweight (Varies by size but the Men’s 10 / Women’s 11.5 is approximately 14.8 oz)
- Waterproof
- Aggressive tread
- 3 season footwear (Although my husband wore these all through Germany in May & June!)
- More protection & support than other natural foot-shaped brands.
CONS:
- More stack height than other natural foot brands (pro or con depending on preference)
- Not a fan of LEMS laces
- A bit bulky for a true minimalist (but surprisingly light!)
FINAL THOUGHTS
Just an FYI, although I was gifted my Boots, my husband immediately purchased a pair for himself. He is just as impressed as I am! He has been so happy wearing them on local trails, casual outings and even brought them along on our hiking trip to Germany.
As someone who already wears minimalist footwear, I have been so impressed with the durability, beauty, comfort, and traction of the Boulder Summit Waterproof Boot! I love hiking in my sandals when I can, but as a Michigander who wants to be active all year round, I need foot-healthy options that work in all weather and trail conditions. This boot is a wonderful choice for minimalist footwear fans who need additional protection & warmth. Do yourself a favor and try out these lightweight waterproof boots!
