Bear spray with a belt holster is on sale for $21.62 which is a record low price! It’s even cheaper with the holster than it is buying it without!
In case you don’t know, bear spray does expire. Here’s a great article about that topic. In short, while the capsaicinoids maintain their potency, after about 3-4 years the propellant in the canister degrades and the spray won’t carry as far (which could clearly make a difference if you’re in a true life or death situation with a charging Grizzly). Probably worth replacing every so often if you live and/or hike in bear country.
In terms of effectiveness of bear spray versus other ways to defend yourself from a bear attack (like a firearm), bear spray appears to be the winner in several studies. Here’s a short article highlighting a couple of studies, but the key takeaway from it is this: “a person’s chance of incurring serious injury from a charging grizzly doubles when bullets are fired versus when bear spray is used.”
