Right now, you can get a Goosefeet Gear Down Balaclava at Massdrop for $59.99 (plus $2.75 shipping) which is 20% off the normal listing price of $80. This balaclava has a temperature rating of 30 degrees, but you can also choose to have it rated to 20 degrees with overfill for $10 more.
If you use a hoodless sleeping bag or a quilt, a down balaclava is a fabulous way to keep your head toasty warm (much warmer than most hats), and you certainly don’t have to limit its use to just sleeping. The reviews in this listing are very favorable.
To be fair, you can get a balaclava on Goosefear Gear’s website for $65, but it’s a very basic version and this one has the following upgrades, per the listing on Massdrop, “The standard 10d fabric has been swapped with a lighter 8d version that boasts better water and wind resistance, and the down filling has been increased from 850- to 950-fill goose down. Smooth drawstring cords around the face let you adjust the opening for better exposure control, and a large facial opening lets you wear the balaclava around your neck.”
So basically you’re getting a better balaclava for less money by purchasing it on Massdrop’s site.
But like all things at Massdrop, this deal won’t last forever (it ends on 1/18/19).
Goosefeet Gear has a strong reputation in the outdoor industry, and I own a pair of their down booties that keep my feet much warmer in my sleeping bag. The owner of the Goosefeet Gear started it when he was in his third year at Georgia Tech, which is my husband’s alma mater, so I like that we have this connection to him (but we don’t know him, personally). I can say that he was very helpful when I was placing my order for my booties and trying to decide how much fill I wanted in them.
