Newbie Tip
Gaiters are great for keeping pebbles, dust, snow, etc. from finding their way inside your shoe. I never hike without mine on my shoes. I’m a big fan of Dirty Girl Gaiters, but the only thing I don’t like about them is that they aren’t very durable. Mine quickly get holes in them over a long backpacking trip or two. Tenacious Tape takes care of the holes, but it doesn’t take forever before they’re really patched up (at least in my experience).
